"Connecting Fractions, Decimals, and Percents" is a hands-on DVD that empowers students by helping them visualize ratios in three distinct ways.
Aimed at grades 5 through 9, the package includes a visually stimulating DVD that takes viewers through an introduction to the relationships that exist among fractions, decimals, and percents. Juggling, magic tricks, and other stunts illustrate mathematical concepts in a fun and lively way.
The first part of the video helps
students become adept at converting back and forth among the different ratios.
The second part addresses the various basic operations and how knowledge and
command of all three representations of ratios make problem solving much easier.
After the program is completed, skills that once seemed unfamiliar or impossible
to grasp will be appreciated as powerful tools that can be used to solve real
life problems.
Designed with the Curriculum and Evaluation
Standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in mind, this DVD
helps teachers and students meet these specific objectives:

The DVD is effective because it uses plain language and thought-provoking
imagery to keep students' interest while explaining basic mathematical concepts.

The DVD is narrated by a trio of performers (one of whom is Bob Infantino "Long
Island's Favorite Magician"), each with particular talents and tricks to
demonstrate. The actions of the narrators illustrate important principles
about fractions, decimals, and percents. Jugglers trade off balls marked
with different numbers to explain equivalency; sleight of hand is used to
illustrate the ease of performing conversions; graphic montages depict the
different uses for different types of ratios; and so on.
Most importantly, the DVD explains how certain number forms are vital to our
everyday life. For example, decimals make a world of difference when it
comes to money, just as school grades are usually framed within the concept of
percent.
Throughout the DVD, the effort is made to show that work with numbers is not a
chore, but something interesting and fun. What's more, the DVD reinforces
an underlying theme: if you want to get really strong at something, you have to
practice and you have to have a foundation in the basics.
