How Houdini Really Died
Harry Houdini, Harry Potter, magic, magicians,
magic history
The end for Harry Houdini, the greatest escape artist the world has ever known, started one Friday morning in the dressing room of a theatre in Montreal.
Houdini was lying on a couch reading some of his mail and being interviewed by some college students. One of the students had heard Houdini say that he could be hit hard in the stomach without being hurt. The boxer asked the Great Houdini if this were true and if he could try hitting the escape artist. Houdini, preoccupied with his mail, mumbled something which the boxer took for a yes.
Before Houdini could sit up or prepare himself for the punch, the student had hit the performer several times in the stomach. From the time he was hit, Houdini endured pain. Houdini not only got through the interview, but also through a matinee and evening performance. However, the pain grew stronger as the day went on.
After the evening show on Saturday, Houdini had to be helped out of the theatre. When he arrived in Detroit where he was to open on Monday, he found that his wife and assistants, against his wishes, had a team of physicians waiting to examine him. These experts informed Houdini that his symptoms indicated that he was suffering from acute appendicitis and should have immediate surgery. However, when Houdini discovered that the theatre for that night was sold out, he insisted on performing.
During the show, he had to be supported by an assistant. At the final curtain, Houdini collapsed. He was rushed to Grace Hospital. The Great Houdini was finally facing a challenge he could not win.
The doctors said it would be a miracle if the performer could live for twelve hours. Houdini fought on for seven days. But finally he turned to his brother, said he was tired of fighting, and died.
The performer was buried in a coffin he had used in one of his greatest feats, an underwater burial. Houdini died on October 31st 1926...his memory lives on.
